Ed Hughes
Ed Hughes is a Victoria based artist working with oils and acrylics for a little more than 50 years. Until 2016 he also taught at McMaster University, but now paints full-time from a beautiful Oak Bay studio (deer occasionally climb up and graze the green roof). His art primarily reflects relationships between us and our natural world. Joy, sadness, distance and strength are woven into his paintings, along with a sense that nature is dominant: we humans are very much passengers and custodians rather than owners.
Ed makes both representational and abstract art. His pieces are often inspired by dreams and animals. Sometimes all of these elements appear in a single painting, as was the case with “Two of everything”. Ed lives in Victoria with his wife Fran and dog Theo. They have several grand-cats, including Salem, who kind of sat for “Two of everything.”
