how it's made
our process
Our heirloom-quality wood puzzles merge technology, art, and nature for a fresh take on an old-school hobby.
We start by curating beautiful pieces of contemporary artwork created by talented up-and-coming Canadian artists, who we often make first contact with via Instagram. The selected artwork is printed in-house on our UV printer before it's adhered to a pre-painted 1/4" piece of birch or maple plywood.
Next, Andrew (Puzzle Lab co-founder and our resident "Mad Scientist") designs a unique cut pattern for each piece of artwork, often incorporating his signature wiggly piece shapes which he creates using a proprietary algorithm that mimics the natural growth pattern of coral reefs.
The puzzles are then cut in one of our two laser cutters, whereby a high-powered laser beam slices each piece apart precisely according to Andrew's cut file.
After cutting, each puzzle is wiped off to remove any excess laser dust (our version of "puzzle dust") before being hand-inspected piece-by-piece on its way into a sleek matte black magnet-close box.
We take a lot of pride in the quality and presentation of our puzzles, and we hope you will too!
